1You if seriously into this should go to one of two ways. Check out Lowes and talk to one of their reps about insulation that can be used as soundproofing. Talk to a dept head, not a rookie. The other would be to go to HGTV.com and check out their interactive library to get the material you need to make your decision. There are many ways to do this some which are really stupid and can make a total mess without getting your desired results. There are also cheap but effective ways to do this but it all depends on the big question. IS this your home IE or are you living with someone or in an apartment. If any of these but you own your place apply you need to get PERMISSION FIRST BEFORE DOING ANYTHING. If you mess up you will be required to pay out for repairs and damages and could be evicted for making changes without consent. Dude, check with who you live with and don't just go and plug up the walls with something you know nothing about. You could be creating a fire hazard or worse. Whatever you do has to be up to building code so check with someone.

the cheapest way that you don't need permission for is to hang heavy padding blankets on the walls and celing. the kind movers use. add a second layer if that is not enough.
