How do I cure sqeeking floor boards (8' x 2' chipboard) laid over sound proof layer

Recently bought a fourth floor flat (built mid 80s) and the floor squeeks badly in heavy use areas like doorways. The chipbord floor does not appear to have any nail or screw fixings into joists below so I'm assuming that they are laid "floating" over a sound proof layer(?). Is it possible that the material under the floorboards has crushed or disintegrated? is my only option to lift the bords?
